Rio Road Corridor Study

Albemarle County, Virginia

Transforming an underperforming corridor

Line and Grade developed a multifaceted vision to transform Albemarle County’s entrance corridor along Rio Road into a high-functioning, multi-modal area that promotes bicycle connectivity, pedestrian safety, and access to mass and micro-transit while accommodating high vehicular average daily traffic counts.

The Rio Road corridor connects Albemarle County’s Rio/29 Small Area Plan and downtown Charlottesville and is a convenient facility for motorist commuters working in the urban core.

Line and Grade led numerous virtual walking and biking tours to understand the various users and contexts of the corridor in order to create and offer effective improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and motorists.

Line and Grade’s work on the corridor planning has led to the successful funding of numerous discrete projects along the corridor.
